Floor sanding allows you to bring new life to your existing floor surfaces. High-quality hardwood floors are particularly durable. It is normal for the surface to become worn after several decades. By performing careful sanding, the fresh wood from the lower layers is revealed. All that remains is a treatment carried out by experts to ensure a flawless finish.
By choosing floor sanding, you also achieve significant savings. It is not always necessary to completely replace the floor, especially in properties with large rooms. Floor sanding is a fast process that also helps reduce material costs and labor time.
It should also be noted that floor sanding is an environmentally friendly choice. It is a quick process, especially when performed by experts who have the proper tools. In contrast, manufacturing new hardwood flooring is a costly process that requires both lumber and considerable energy resources.
A hardwood floor usually requires two sanding sessions to ensure the surface is perfectly smooth, free of imperfections, and ready for the application of a protective varnish. The first sanding is done using medium-grit sandpaper, which is sufficient to remove the old finish. Our experts then carry out a second sanding with fine-grit sandpaper to give the floor its best possible appearance. The final step is floor varnishing. In some cases, it may also be necessary to apply a stain and a varnish.
Applying a semi-transparent oil-based stain is used to alter the appearance of a damaged hardwood floor that has first been sanded to remove all imperfections. The team at Sablage de Planchers LP offers a wide range of stain colors, from ebony black to very dark brown, as well as red, white, pink, and all shades that mimic traditional or exotic wood species. Custom colors are also available. These are reproduced using a sample and are also offered with Colobar technology.
Sanding a softwood floor follows the same steps as sanding a hardwood floor. Sometimes referred to as softwood or resinous wood, softwood is more complex to treat. Softwood species are less dense. While they are easier to work with, they are also more difficult to restore because they are less resistant to impacts and scratches. Softwood floor sanding must be carried out by specialists using appropriate tools.
It is possible to sand a hardwood floor on which carpet, tile, or linoleum has been glued. However, this process is much more complex. The same applies to floors that have been painted with water-based or oil-based paint, as opposed to those stained with a semi-transparent stain specifically designed for wood floors. To achieve results that meet your expectations, coarse-grit sandpaper must be used. The sanding time will also be longer.
When a hardwood floor needs to be stained, we perform three sanding passes. To do so, we use 40-80-100 grit sandpapers and a specialized sander that can be used along the entire perimeter of the walls. This oil-based stain is available in a wide range of custom colors. We must then wait between 18 and 24 hours before applying the Berger Seigle protective varnish, which is water-based.
If we apply varnish directly to the sanded wood without staining it, we use an eco-friendly water-based product such as Bona or Vermeister. These offer several finishes, including matte, satin, semi-gloss, or gloss. It is also possible to choose MC Crystal oil-based varnish, which provides an ultra-gloss finish.
