Typically, hardwood floors require two sanding passes to achieve a smooth, flawless surface ready for protective varnish application. The first sanding uses medium-grit sandpaper to remove old varnish, followed by a second pass with fine-grit sandpaper to enhance the floor's appearance. Afterward, a floor varnish or stain followed by varnish can be applied.
Sanding Softwood Floors
Sanding softwood floors involves the same steps as hardwood but is more challenging. Therefore, a slightly higher cost should be anticipated.
Sanding Floors Covered with Glue or Paint
Sanding hardwood floors previously covered with carpet, tile, or linoleum is more time-consuming and difficult, but feasible. Similarly, floors painted with water- or oil-based paints (not stained with semi-transparent stains designed for wood floors) are harder to sand. Coarse-grit sandpaper is required, and the sanding process takes significantly longer.
Applying Stain and Varnish After Floor Sanding
When staining a hardwood floor, we perform three sanding passes using 40-80-100 grit sandpapers and a special sander that reaches along wall edges. We then apply Totenic semi-transparent oil-based stain by Pratt & Lambert, available in a wide range of customizable colors. We wait 24 to 48 hours before applying the water-based protective varnish.
If applying varnish directly to the sanded wood without staining, we use either Vermeister water-based eco-friendly varnish, available in matte, satin, semi-gloss, or gloss finishes, or MC Crystal oil-based varnish with an ultra-gloss finish.
