Stair Sanding Method
Typically, only two sanding passes are needed to restore a hardwood staircase to bare wood. This process must be very meticulous, as staircases contain numerous small corners. The surface must be smooth and free of any previous varnish or stain, leaving no imperfections.
The first sanding is done with medium-grit sandpaper to remove old varnish. The second sanding uses fine-grit sandpaper to perfectly smooth the surface. Afterward, staining (if desired) and varnishing can be applied.
We use a semi-transparent oil-based stain (Totenic by Pratt & Lambert) that penetrates deeply into the wood, highlighting its grain and veins. This stain also offers excellent color retention over time. Approximately 24 hours after applying the stain (48 hours for very dark colors), we apply an eco-friendly water-based varnish from Vermeister, ideal for high-traffic areas.
