Which Wood Species to Choose?

There are three types of wood for flooring: softwoods, hardwoods, and exotic woods (imported from other countries). For indoor flooring, you can choose between hardwoods (maple, white or red oak, ash, beech, cherry, birch, walnut, elm, poplar) or softwoods (pine, larch, fir, spruce, etc.).

Exotic wood species (ipe, mahogany, acacia, tigerwood, jatoba, ebony, lapacho, bamboo, cumaru, etc.) are the hardest and most resistant to scratches and impacts. These species also have a very long lifespan (50 years or more) and resist water and ultraviolet rays from the sun, which can yellow and deteriorate wood. However, note that ipe wood does not fare well in dry indoor environments.

Oak is the most commonly used wood species for flooring, even though it's not the hardest. White or red oak is very stable and allows stains and varnishes to penetrate well. For bathrooms, oak, ash, Douglas fir, chestnut, teak, ipe, and bamboo can be installed.
